Historic Preservation Association of Coral Gables (HPACG) has been a recent beneficiary of partnerships in back-to-back events at Books & Books and the University of Miami Libraries. HPACG’s ability to leverage its mission and loyal following among preservationists into strong partnerships with the above-mentioned institutions was a unique opportunity to express our mission of “promoting the understanding and importance of historical resources and their preservation” to a broad and varied group of individuals in the greater community. HPACG, in collaboration with Books & Books and the University of Miami Libraries, joined in welcoming author Hermes Mallea in his presentation of his new book “ESCAPE, The Heyday of Caribbean Glamour” which traces – for the first time – the development of tourism and exceptional resorts in the region between 1920 and 1980. Hermes dedicated a chapter to Coral Gables.
Hermes Mallea is an architect and a partner in M(Group), a design firm based in New York. Mallea received a Bachelor of Architecture degree from the University of Miami, attended the Master’s Program in Historic Preservation at Columbia University. He is licensed in New York State and is a member of the AIA. M(Group) has received numerous awards including The Friends of the Upper East Side Historic Districts’ Residential Restoration Award. The firm has been included in Architectural Digest’s AD100 as well as the top designer listings of “House Beautiful”, “House & Garden” and “New York Magazine”. Mallea serves on The Library Council of the New York Public Library, the Board of Directors of The Friends of the Upper East Side Historic Districts and the Trustees of the Friends of Clermont State Historic Site.
