LA FINCA FINK built in 1938 was home to one of Coral Gables’ most important artists, Denman Fink and his wife Betsy. The architect of LA FINCA FINK is Marion Manley, the second female to receive an architect’s license from the State of Florida and Miami’s first female architect.  The residence exemplifies Manley’s use of native building materials such as coral rock. The architectural drawings for the property constitute the most complete set of drawings for any of Manley’s residential commissions. The home was designated a local landmark in 1994.

Thank you to guest speaker Herbert Brito for an enlightening history of the property, its architect, and its owners. Brito holds a Master of Arts in Architecture degree from the University of Florida with a specialty in architectural preservation. Brito has been named a Design Excellence Peer in Historic Preservation and Interior Design by the U.S. General Services Administration.

After the presentation, HPACG held its annual meeting and elections. Members enjoyed cocktails and conversation among the 2020 Board of Directors. Returning board members include officers               Karelia Martinez Carbonell, president; Brett Gillis, vice president; Mary Anne Danguillecourt, secretary; Lisa Bennett, Pat Button, Alice Goldhagen, Ann Goodman, and David Mitchell.

Highlights of the meeting celebrated the organization’s mission of “promoting the understanding and importance of historic resources and their preservation” through its educational panel, stewardship, book series, preservation projects, and fundraising events.

January 19—BEAUTY & THE BRUTE EDUCATIONAL PANEL

The educational event at the University of Miami School of Architecture Glasgow Lecture Hall titled Beauty & the Brute. The five-star panel discussed the emerging interest in the Brutalist movement, its buildings, and the future of such structures. The panel tackled global, national and local initiatives [including the future status of the 1973 Brutalist-home of the Coral Gables public safety building].  HPACG is at the forefront of this important preservation issue. March 24—George Giving Society Benefactor Event held at a private home.  In the spirit of philanthropy, the Board of Directors of the Historic Preservation Association of Coral Gables invites friends and benefactors who support the George Giving Society—an annual fund campaign. Donations are unrestricted and benefit historic preservation and its resources.  The invitation-only event was at the elegant and historic home of Coral Gables resident Ray Corral.  INVITATION-ONLY

NOVEMBER 8—KICK OFF TERTULIA #1

THE CORAL GABLES TERTULIA is a historical book series that takes place at distinct, private, historic landmark homes in Coral Gables. At each tertulia, a featured speaker presents a book with historical and cultural themes. The discussion followed by a reception for participants to socialize and enjoy complimentary drinks and light hors d’oeuvres. The next tertulia is in January.

NOVEMBER 12– Thank you to City Commission

Vote passed unanimously to return two restored original White Way Arcadian lampposts to the Coral Gables Country Club.  HPACG is proud to partner with the City on this unique opportunity to bring back a piece of lost history! EXCITING!!

NOVEMBER 20—APT TOUR

HPACG directors hosted a full-day tour for the Association of Preservation Technology that began at the Coral Gables Museum, continued to City Hall, Merrick House, Venetian Pool, The Biltmore Hotel and ended at the Coral Gables Library.

LOOKING AHEAD INTO 2020

January 12—HPACG will continue to offer unique opportunities and experiences through its “Destination” series that will take preservation aficionados to “out of the way” historic site.
