Members and friends of the Historic Preservation Association of Coral Gables gathered at a private home in the historic French Country Village to send-off the old year and kick-off the new year!

January—MONTGOMERY GARDEN The Board kicked-off the New Year and held its Annual Meeting at Montgomery Botanical Garden–a nonprofit and very private 120 acre garden established in 1959 that opens only twice a year to the public. FREE

March 11—GEORGE GIVING SOCIETY Benefactor Event held at a private home. In the spirit of philanthropy, the Board of Directors of the Historic Preservation Association of Coral Gables invites friends and benefactors who support the George Giving Society—a giving society of the annual fund campaign. Donations are unrestricted and benefit historic preservation and its resources. INVITATION-ONLY

April 26—SEE IT LIKE A NATIVE Members & friends were invited to a private guided tour of the “threatened” Brutalist-style public safety building. The tour was offered by Officer Kelly Denham of the Coral Gables Police and Fire Station 2801 Salzedo Street. The 1970s Brutalist design is an important architectural style typical of the era. The building is threatened for demolition by the developers. FREE.

June 5—ONLY IN MIAMI! Straight from New York Over 60 guests attended the book event to meet widely admired design historian and New York gallery owner Emily Evans Eerdmans to speak about the subject of her new book “Henri Samuel, The Master of the French Interior” at the long established antiques gallery, Bonnin Ashley Antiques. PAID EVENT

June 12—A LIGHT AT THE END OF THE TUNNEL. At Commission Meeting Resolution Passed: accepting the recommendation of the Historic Preservation Board to the City Commission that the City acquire all 77 sites along University Drive and Riviera Drive (Historic Preservation Board vote: 7-0).

June 19—Update map of WWL inventory—41
1. Plus 1 additional light located at 1253 Palermo Ave (near Church of the little Flower)
2. The 10 newly discovered historically intact lights up in Broward County.
3. Approximately 10 dismantled and damaged poles out at the Public Works Yard.

July 10 — A SAVING GRACE! Due to the timely media coverage and a considerable number of residents voicing their support to halt demolition of the historic “La Salle Building”, Commissioner Michael Mena agreed to stop demolition and bring item back to be discussed at the Coral Gables Commission meeting on Tuesday July 10th.

The Coral Gables City Commission showed a great respect for our City’s historic legacy and patrimonial heritage by rescinding [by a 5-0 decision] the April 24, 2018 Resolution that “authorized the City to enter into a parking agreement with owner MML [La Salle] once the owner demolishes the structure.”

And in a second resolution, the Commission asked staff to discuss with La Salle owner options that would “save” the building.

October 1—BUCKS IN BUDGET After several years of advocacy… there will be light at the end of the tunnel!  2018-2019 Budget. One can find the historic lights notation on pg 62 in budget document- 5 year capital plan- historic facilities. $365,000 in the current budget available, plus additional monies in future years totaling over $800,000

LOOKING AHEAD INTO 2019

January 19—BEAUTY & THE BRUTE EDUCATIONAL PANEL
Over 80 RSVPs for the annual educational event at the University of Miami School of Architecture Glasgow Lecture Hall titled Beauty & the Brute. The five-star panel discussed the emerging interest in the Brutalist movement, its buildings, and the future of such structures. The panel tackled global, national and local initiatives [including the future status of the 1973 Brutalist-home of the Coral Gables public safety building]. HPACG is at the forefront of this important preservation issue. FREE
