The Board of Directors of the Historic Preservation Association of Coral Gables unanimously voted to engage with the media in order to share with the public this very significant and time-sensitive news about THE impending demolition of a historic property [2341,2345 Le Jeune Road] that constitutes THE ONLY remaining structure of GEORGE MERRICK’S Coral Gables Business District.

This 1923 building was the first office of the Coral Gables Construction Company–George Merrick’s company– and was responsible for building vast portions of the City in the 1920s. [Designation Report available if interested. Please contact info@historiccoralgables.org]

The City of Coral Gables will lose yet another historical site, and along with it, more of its cultural patrimony and heritage for the sole purpose of adding 35 to 40 ADDITIONAL PARKING SPACES. [RESOLUTION APRIL 24, 2018]

Please note that the resolution of april 24, 2018 indicates a brief history: The City’s explanation for the demolition…”The City [the Tenant] would like to lease the lot for five years at a base rent of $17,500 per month…The lot…would be consolidated with City operated and owned Lot 3 to produce approximately 35 to 40 additional parking spaces….The improvements will address demand for parking as a result of the Miracle Mile and Giralda Streetscape project….”

This matter dates back to February 2017 when the Coral Gables Historic Preservation Board voted NOT to designate the LaSalle Dry Cleaners site at southeast corner of Le Jeune Road and Aragon. Alterations to the property occurring throughout the years was a non-issue according to the proposed designation report, which states that alterations are ALL reversible [Designation Report P.21]

The designation report suggests that the architectural changes undergone over the years can be reversed to original status.
